Frequently Asked Questions: New Students
-
I've decided to defer my admission, do I still need to complete the withdraw process?
Yes, if you are not enrolling in the upcoming semester then you must complete both the University Registrar withdraw and the ISSS withdraw request.
-
Are there any ramifications to my F-1 status if I withdraw from the upcoming semester?
An F-1 student's immigration status is dependent on enrollment in a program of study. Read below for additional information as it relates to new initial and transfer students.
Initial Student
- Your SEVIS record will be activated in the first semester you physically attend Texas State.
- Deferring to a future semester does not negatively impact your SEVIS record.
- Submit an I-20 Deferral Request. ISSS can make updates to your SEVIS record including changing the start date which preserves any paid I-901 fee.
Transfer Student
- Your SEVIS record will not be affected as long as you enroll in a program of study within 5 months or the next available term.
- If your SEVIS record was already transferred to Texas State, contact your transfer-out school and request to cancel the SEVIS transfer.
- If your SEVIS transfer release date has already passed contact Inational@txstate.edu for a reverse SEVIS transfer.
- SEVP guidance states that a transfer student must start attending classes within 5 months of the last day he or she attended classes or the next available session, whichever comes sooner.
-
How will withdrawing affect my future enrollment?
Not enrolling in the semester you are admitted may impact your future academic status. Some students are eligible for deferring their initial enrollment to a future semester. Not all programs allow program deferrals.
Graduate Students
- Some graduate programs allow program deferrals. Review the Graduate College Readmission and Deferral Policy.
- Contact the Graduate College for more information.
Undergraduate Students
- Deferrals are not allowed. Students must submit a new application for future enrollment.
- Contact Undergraduate Admissions for more information.
-
How will withdrawing affect I-20?
The initial Form I-20 is issued for a specific semester. If you are not enrolling in the semester that your I-20 was created for please submit an I-20 Update Request.
If you are approved to enroll in a future semester whether through deferral or new admission, ISSS can create you a new I-20.

-
Are there any ramifications to my F-1 status if I withdraw from the current semester?
Possibly yes, if you are enrolled during the semester and plan to withdraw, you must schedule an appointment with a DSO and complete the F-1 Student Withdrawal Request Form.
Withdrawing from the current semester may result in the termination of your SEVIS record. Depending on the reason for your termination you may be granted a 15-day grace period to depart the US.
If you did not notify ISSS and withdrew from your classes without ISSS approval then you have no grace period and must immediately depart the US.
-
Are there any ramifications to my F-1 status if I withdraw from the summer semester?
If you are a continuing student, withdrawing from the summer has no impact on your SEVIS record and F-1 status. Per immigration regulations, there is no enrollment requirement in summer for continuing students. Therefore, withdrawing from the summer has no impact on your immigration record.
Please check with your faculty or academic advisor on how withdrawing from the summer could impact your degree progress and graduation plan.
If you are a new student who is beginning a new program in the summer then withdrawing can have an impact on your SEVIS record and F-1 status. You are strongly advised to schedule an appointment with a DSO and complete the F-1 Student Withdrawal Request Form.

-
I did complete the semester, but now I’ve decided I want to take some time off. When do I need to depart the US?
F-1 regulations require continuous full-time enrollment every fall and spring semester. Choosing to not enroll in a fall or spring may result in the termination of your SEVIS record. Please schedule an appointment with a DSO.

I've decided to go home for the summer. How do I withdraw from all my summer classes?

How does a "W" grade affect my immigration status?
A "W" grade is assigned when a student drops a course by the published drop deadline.
Dropping a course without ISSS authorization may result in the termination of an F-1 student's SEVIS record.
F-1 students must be enrolled full time each semester (fall and spring) to maintain lawful immigration status. If your total credit hours drop below full-time enrollment, and you have not received approval from ISSS, you will be out of status. Review the Reduced Course Load (RCL) policies and schedule an appointment with a DSO before dropping courses that result in less than full-time enrollment.
-
How can I drop a course and still maintain my status?
Please schedule an appointment with a DSO to see if you qualify for a Reduced Course Load (RCL).
Keep in mind that:
- You can drop a course if you will still be enrolled in the minimum total credit hours (12 credit hours for undergraduate and 9 credit hours for graduate).
- You can drop from a class if you have received prior approval from ISSS through a RCL.
- You cannot drop a class if you do not reach the minimum total credit hours and do not qualify for a RCL.
-
I can't withdraw. Will it affect my status if I don't pass the class?
A student is considered to be maintaining status if the student is enrolled full-time and is making normal progress towards the completion of the student's degree. A low GPA generally does not affect immigration status unless the low GPA is a reason why a student is ineligible to enroll in courses.
-
What happens if I fail a class more than once and have a low GPA?
Generally, a low GPA does not impact your immigration status. However, if you are placed on academic probation or suspension, your immigration status may be in jeopardy. Please schedule an appointment with a DSO and meet with your faculty or academic advisor immediately to discuss your options.
