Finding On-Campus Employment

On-Campus Job Search Tips

By Mason Murphy, Career Counselor at TXST

Starting your academic journey at Texas State University can be exciting but can also make you a little nervous. We at Career Services are glad you are here. Some of you may have questions about finding a part-time job on campus. There are a few strategies and cultural norms that are important to consider as you begin your search.

Strategies

1. Please use Handshake to search for a part-time job.
2. Speak with faculty members in your academic department about opportunities connected to your major field of study.
3. Schedule an appointment with Career Services to meet with a career counselor. You can discuss job search strategies, review your resume, and prepare for an interview.
4. Attend the Part-Time Job Fair on Wednesday, September 4, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the mall outside the LBJ Student Center.

Cultural Norms to Remember

1. Once you apply for a part-time job, allow a little time before following up on the status of your application. It is good to wait at least two weeks before checking back on the job you applied for.
2. How you follow up is important. What can work best is to send a brief email, respectfully asking about the status of your application. It is not recommended that you stop by the department in person. Anyone available at that specific time may not have an update to provide you.
3. Please be patient! The process of reviewing resumes and conducting interviews, even for part-time campus jobs, can often take more time than expected.
